I found some info about the design behind one of Shannon's tattoos.
I was reading a book called "The Scared Wisdom of the American Indians"

Spindle whorls were used by coast Salish people during spinning
to prevent the wool from slipping from the spindle. This wooden whorl
is decorated with a human figure in a fetal position, a common
motif in Northwest Coast design, and two others.
